ANDREW LAUGHLIN

Andrew Laughlin has been in the marine industry for over 30 years and is an Independent Marine Surveyor based on the Gold Coast. He currently  services the South East Queensland region after having lived and worked in Indonesia from 2010 to 2020.  Starting as a deckhand/ divemaster in Australia at 19, Andrew has worked his way thru the ranks during his career. He has worked as a yacht captain, dive instructor, cruise director, yacht broker, dealership principal, construction project manager, consultant, and marine surveyor. During his time in Indonesia he was a ship builder, charter vessel manager, marine surveyor and loss assessor.  Andrew holds a Diploma in Marine Surveying and is a Full Member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS), has a Diploma in Maritime Operations, Captains certifications as an RYA/MCA Master of Yachts (200GT), AYF Yachtmaster Offshore, and is a PADI Master Instructor.

ANTHONY GATES

Anthony was born on the Esplanade at Henley Beach, South Australia, the next generation of a long line of seamen. As a youngster he began racing dinghies competitively, winning a junior world championship in 1989 and rating fourth in the open world championships. He has continued to hone his skills with further qualifications, gaining the Master 5 Certificate of Competency for Trading Vessels up to 24m in length for Offshore Operations in Australia. In 2006 he completed the PADI Divermaster Certificate at North Borneo Dive and Sea Sports Semporna. Deliveries later in the year included Phuket, Thailand to Darwin, Australia and Phuket to Perth, Australia.

In 2007 Anthony and his family moved to Phuket where he became Service Manager for a large International Yacht Brokerage. His vast experience with all things relating to boats was further enhanced by exposure to a wide variety of vessels and clients. As Service Manager responsible for up to 30 pleasure craft from 6m to 30m, he worked closely with a range of marine surveyors in a variety of different roles. To further enhance his knowledge Anthony gained a Diploma in Marine Surveying with the International Institute of Marine Surveying (U.K.) and in 2012 established Andaman Marine Surveyors (AMS) with a view to providing the highest quality support for vessel owners in South East Asia.

Our Principal Marine Surveyor, Damian Turner, began his career at sea on the wooden fishing cutters of Southern and Western Australia in 1996. ERIC MCILWAIN

Eric has worked on self-discharging bulk carriers, tankers, passenger ferries, containerhsips, project managed refits and survey dockings for crude oil tankers, bulkers, ro-ros, steam-fired ore carriers, stripped and transported 2 MAN52/55 V18 engines from Port Hedland to Singapore and Japan via Fremantle. He was the project engineer for a series of 3 new Aluminium fast ferries for the Gladstone LNG precinct.

GREG MARSDEN

Following Officer and Engineering training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Royal School of Military Engineering, Greg completed a seventeen year in the British Armed Forces. He served globally including deployments to the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. During his military career he qualified as a boat operator which led to a passion for powerboats. Greg was a double trophy winner in the UIM 1600Nm 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race, competed in the iconic UIM Offshore series and in 2009 broke the World Record for the fastest circumnavigation of Ireland in a powerboat (which unfortunately has now been broken.!). Following retirement from the military and the commercial defence sector, Greg gained Diplomas in Small Ships Surveying and Marine Accident Investigation from UK’s National Maritime Training Centre and has achieved marine surveyor recognition with both Maritime New Zealand and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. Greg has also achieved Inspector status with the IMCI specialising in CE (European) and CA (UK) Vessel certification in New Zealand. Greg also works routinely with UK partners specialising in MCA Coding. Currently Greg is working towards recognition with the US National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Greg is professionally accredited by the UK Engineering Council, the City and Guilds Institute, and is a member of both the Society of Consulting Engineers and Marine Surveyors, and a Commercially Certified Marine Surveyor through the Australasian Institute of Maritime Surveyors.  In 2021 Greg was appointed to the Board of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors and sits on the Ethics and Standards and Recreational Vessel Sub Committees. and will take over of Deputy Chair in 2025.
