Briar Maritime was Founded in January 1986 by two Master Mariners, Briar Maritime provides the full spectrum of marine surveying services, training and consultancy to our clientele, both local and international. There are four Master Mariners and other personnel certified by DAWR. We provide bulk vessel inspections and inspection services for the export of forestry products for DAWR. We have a launch in three Tasmanian ports for draft surveys. We have a high safety culture and our personnel do not hang over the ship side on rope ladders or swing from bosun chairs on the provision crane. We are AMSA Accredited Surveyors and perform surveys under the NSCV. We are licensed certifiers with the NMI and provide metrology services (meter proving) to the downstream oil industry, including storage tank calibration and oil loss control consultancy.

Independent Owner and Operator Klaus Wermuth established Cargo Care Pty Ltd as a fully registered limited Company in Brisbane Australia in 1993. Klaus retired in 2009 when the company was acquired by Capt. Olav Castellino. The principal surveyor of the company is Capt. Olav Castellino who has 40 years’ experience in the shipping industry and has sailed in various ascending capacities at sea including the rank of Master. Over the years the company has grown out of Brisbane and now operates in all states of Australia with offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Port Kembla and Melbourne.

ANDREW LAUGHLIN
Andrew Laughlin has been in the marine industry for over 30 years and is an Independent Marine Surveyor based on the Gold Coast. He currently services the South East Queensland region after having lived and worked in Indonesia from 2010 to 2020. Starting as a deckhand/ divemaster in Australia at 19, Andrew has worked his way thru the ranks during his career. He has worked as a yacht captain, dive instructor, cruise director, yacht broker, dealership principal, construction project manager, consultant, and marine surveyor. During his time in Indonesia he was a ship builder, charter vessel manager, marine surveyor and loss assessor. Andrew holds a Diploma in Marine Surveying and is a Full Member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS), has a Diploma in Maritime Operations, Captains certifications as an RYA/MCA Master of Yachts (200GT), AYF Yachtmaster Offshore, and is a PADI Master Instructor.
ANTHONY GATES
Anthony was born on the Esplanade at Henley Beach, South Australia, the next generation of a long line of seamen. As a youngster he began racing dinghies competitively, winning a junior world championship in 1989 and rating fourth in the open world championships. He has continued to hone his skills with further qualifications, gaining the Master 5 Certificate of Competency for Trading Vessels up to 24m in length for Offshore Operations in Australia. In 2006 he completed the PADI Divermaster Certificate at North Borneo Dive and Sea Sports Semporna. Deliveries later in the year included Phuket, Thailand to Darwin, Australia and Phuket to Perth, Australia.
In 2007 Anthony and his family moved to Phuket where he became Service Manager for a large International Yacht Brokerage. His vast experience with all things relating to boats was further enhanced by exposure to a wide variety of vessels and clients. As Service Manager responsible for up to 30 pleasure craft from 6m to 30m, he worked closely with a range of marine surveyors in a variety of different roles. To further enhance his knowledge Anthony gained a Diploma in Marine Surveying with the International Institute of Marine Surveying (U.K.) and in 2012 established Andaman Marine Surveyors (AMS) with a view to providing the highest quality support for vessel owners in South East Asia.

BLW Marine personnel hold individual accreditation to provide surveys for vessels registered under the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Domestic Commercial Vessels regulation, in addition to Certified Commercial Marine Surveyors (CCMS) through the Australian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS). BLW Surveyors are members of the Nautical Institute UK, in addition to members of Lloyds of London PI Club. Our Company is Brisbane, Queensland based, with an office location also in Perth, Western Australia. Garner Marine Services was started in 2017 by Brendan Garner after 27 years working in the marine industry. Brendan is a qualified boat builder/shipwright, graduating at the top of the class with an overall Victorian Boating Industry apprentice of the year honours in 1999. Brendan went onto complete a diploma in Yacht and Small Craft Surveying in 2011 through IIMS and is a current member of AIMS and IIMS. The vision of the company is to provide an excellent level of customer service and advice to all of our clients. DAMIAN TURNER
Our Principal Marine Surveyor, Damian Turner, began his career at sea on the wooden fishing cutters of Southern and Western Australia in 1996. After more than 10 years involvement in various fishing sectors around Australia, Damian moved further afield to explore the greater maritime industry. Endeavours include Ocean Towing and Tug & Barge operations, Multi-Purpose/General Cargo, Coastal Trading and Foreign-Going Shipping. Since 2005 Damian has provided assistance with several sales, and surveyed numerous vessels in Australia and South-East Asia.
Credentials include Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering), and an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Marine Surveying. Seagoing certification is Engineer Class 1 (Steam), Class 2 (Motor), Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) and Master <24m Near Coastal. Damian is an AMSA Accredited Marine Surveyor, Accredited Grain Surveyor, Authorised Officer (Dry Bulk), and 3rd Party Flag State Inspector for the Marshall Islands Shipping Registry. Professional registration is Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council UK, following membership with IMarEST, RINA and the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS). Maritime OHS, Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights licences along with MSIC and Flinders Port access are also currently held.
ERIC MCILWAIN
Eric has worked on self-discharging bulk carriers, tankers, passenger ferries, containerhsips, project managed refits and survey dockings for crude oil tankers, bulkers, ro-ros, steam-fired ore carriers, stripped and transported 2 MAN52/55 V18 engines from Port Hedland to Singapore and Japan via Fremantle. He was the project engineer for a series of 3 new Aluminium fast ferries for the Gladstone LNG precinct.
Eric has a Certificate of Competency Class 1 (Motor) issued by AMSA, a B Eng (Mech) and Bachelor of Law from the University of Southern Queensland as well as a Diploma of Marine Surveying from the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors. He is a Member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)as well as a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Marine Engineer with IMarEST, a Member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS), the Marine Lawyers Association of Australia and New Zealand and the Queensland Law Society With these years of experience across all aspects of the marine industry, Hastings Marine and Engineering is well positioned to provide our clients with high quality marine engineering advise that is second to none.
GREG MARSDEN
Following Officer and Engineering training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Royal School of Military Engineering, Greg completed a seventeen year in the British Armed Forces. He served globally including deployments to the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. During his military career he qualified as a boat operator which led to a passion for powerboats. Greg was a double trophy winner in the UIM 1600Nm 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race, competed in the iconic UIM Offshore series and in 2009 broke the World Record for the fastest circumnavigation of Ireland in a powerboat (which unfortunately has now been broken.!). Following retirement from the military and the commercial defence sector, Greg gained Diplomas in Small Ships Surveying and Marine Accident Investigation from UK’s National Maritime Training Centre and has achieved marine surveyor recognition with both Maritime New Zealand and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. Greg has also achieved Inspector status with the IMCI specialising in CE (European) and CA (UK) Vessel certification in New Zealand. Greg also works routinely with UK partners specialising in MCA Coding. Currently Greg is working towards recognition with the US National Marine Manufacturers Association.
Greg is professionally accredited by the UK Engineering Council, the City and Guilds Institute, and is a member of both the Society of Consulting Engineers and Marine Surveyors, and a Commercially Certified Marine Surveyor through the Australasian Institute of Maritime Surveyors. In 2021 Greg was appointed to the Board of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors and sits on the Ethics and Standards and Recreational Vessel Sub Committees. and will take over of Deputy Chair in 2025. In 2024 Greg won the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors – Specialist Field Award for his work in the Marine Accident Investigation field.

I spent 8 years as a commercial marine tourism Operations Manager and General Manager. Looking after a fleet of 7 vessels and over 70 staff. For 9 years I undertook a role as Fleet Engineering for a commercial operation, overseeing 35 commercial vessel and 14 maintenance staff. With the development and implementation of a preventative maintenance system along with life extending refits and the development of 5 year maintenance budgets. Becoming an AMSA Accredited Surveyor in 2015, conducting survey inspection and consultative services for a range of industries such as, Tourism, Commercial Fishing, Trading, Government, Marine Construction and Research.
